Half Barn Door by Yourself
Finish a shed or garage with a half barn door. Barn door construction normally uses tongue pine and slot or cedar barn cladding. If you are making a door that opens on the hinges, that should be the width of the door opening. A door made to open with sliding rollers must be 6 inches wider than the door.
A barn door is heavy. If you have a wide door, consider double doors to prevent the doors from sinking as they age. A Dutch half barn door gate adds rustic charm to any home. But in a horse stable its purpose is practical as well. Since the door is divided in half horizontally and each section is opened independently, it makes for a healthy environment by allowing light and ventilation in the stand with the upper part open and safety when the lower section is closed.
Also, the two opening sections is a quick and easy way to get the horse out without taking it through the barn. The horse may also feel less confined to the open top and still remain secure in their own position. If you are going to paint the door, consider painting all the wood before mounting the door. It is easier to cover all hard-to-reach places before assembly.
